FCC Looks To Offer Consumers More Wireless Choice

An anonymous reader writes “The FCC is butting heads with wireless phone companies over ‘wiggle room’ the government organization wishes to allow consumers. Along with the move to the auction system, the government is removing restrictions on pieces of the wireless spectrum, which will allow a freedom of choice not usually seen with wireless communication devices. ‘In the past, when the F.C.C. auctioned spectrum for cellular service, it allowed the winners to determine the equipment and applications that would run on their networks. That created the current status quo, in which a vast majority of American consumers buy a handset from a wireless service provider. The open-access rules, which will apply to about one-third of the spectrum being sold at the auction, represent a significant departure from past practice. They require the winners to let consumers use any tested, safe and compatible device or application on its network. Entrepreneurs could sell handsets with capabilities that are unavailable — or unavailable at affordable prices — from current carriers.’”

Space Elevator Teams Compete for NASA Prizes

Hugh Pickens writes “The University of Saskatchewan’s has the first place climb in the Second Annual Space Elevator Games being held this weekend at the Davis County Event Center in Salt Lake City. Teams are competing for $1,000,000 in NASA prize money. Although the idea of a space elevator has been around for decades, the space technologies needed to support it have yet to be created. The non-profit Spaceward Foundation has hosted an annual competition since 2005 to build a super-strong tether, or get a robot to climb a suspended ribbon. In the robot climber competition, teams have to get their device to hurtle up a 100-metre-long ribbon, suspended from a crane, at an average speed of two metres per second. The climber must be powered from the ground: strategies include reflecting sunlight from huge mirrors on the ground to solar panels on the climber; shining lasers from the ground up to similar panels on the robot; or firing microwaves up at the climber. Qualifying rounds have been taking place all week, and although high winds and rain have caused delays, four out of eight teams have made it into the finals. There are no outdoor climbs today because of bad weather but some of the tether competitions will happen indoors later this afternoon.”

Long-lived Mars Rovers to Keep on Roving

An anonymous reader writes with a link to a ComputerWorld article about the ongoing saga of the Martian rovers. They’ve overcome amazing obstacles and they show no signs of shutting down any time soon. “‘After more than three and a half years, Spirit and Opportunity are showing some signs of aging, but they are in good health and capable of conducting great science,’ John Callas, rover project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a statement. Since landing, the rovers have had to surmount a host of technical issues. Just a few weeks after landing, the Spirit rover had an out-of-memory problem that almost ended its mission before it began, but scientists were able to get the rover back into operation. In April 2004, both needed software updates to correct problems and improve their performance.”

New GPS Navigator Relies On ‘Wisdom of the Crowds’

Hugh Pickens writes “The New York Times is running an article on Dash Express, a new navigation system for automobiles that not only receives GPS location data, but broadcasts information about its travels. Information is passed back to Dash over a cellular data network, where it is shared with other users to let them know if there are slowdowns or traffic jams on the road ahead. The real benefit of the system isn’t apparent until enough units are collecting data in a given area - so Dash distributed over 2,000 prototype units to test drivers in 25 large cities.”

Woz Still Misses Homebrew Computer Club and Apple

Even to this day, he says, he still misses the Homebrew Computer Club and his days running around Apple leading the technical teams. ‘I miss the technical camaraderie … The whole feeling of being on a revolution, on the edge. I miss the intuitive philosophies.’”

WiMax Folded Into 3G ‘Family’

Andrew Donoghue writes “ZDNet UK is reporting that although WiMax and 3G have been battling it out as rival broadband wireless technologies, WiMax has effectively been folded into 3G’s future development, after the International Telecommunication Union decided to include it in the IMT-2000 set of standards. ‘An auction is to be held next year in which spectrum around the 2.6GHz band — which is usable for both 3G and mobile WiMax — will be sold off on a technology-neutral basis. It remains to be seen what the implications of Friday’s announcement are for that auction but, as the investments already made in 3G infrastructure had been a major detrimental factor for WiMax, its inclusion in IMT-2000 has the potential to shake up the entire argument.’”

Little Old Lady Hammers Comcast

Apparently fed up with the lousy service she received from a botched Comcast installation of “triple-play”, and a completely humiliating experience at a customer service center, 75-year-old Mona “The Hammer” Shaw took her claw hammer back to the customer service center and bludgeoned the office equipment into tiny plastic pieces.”

Robotic Cannon Loses Control, Kills 9

TJ_Phazerhacki writes “A new high tech weapon system demonstrated one of the prime concerns circling smarter and smarter methods of defense last week — an Oerlikon GDF-005 cannon went wildly out of control during live fire test exercises in South Africa, killing 9. Scarily enough, this is far from the first instance of a smart weapon ‘turning’ on its handlers. ‘Electronics engineer and defence company CEO Richard Young says he can’t believe the incident was purely a mechanical fault. He says his company, C2I2, in the mid 1990s, was involved in two air defence artillery upgrade programmes, dubbed Projects Catchy and Dart. During the shooting trials at Armscor’s Alkantpan shooting range, “I personally saw a gun go out of control several times,” Young says. “They made a temporary rig consisting of two steel poles on each side of the weapon, with a rope in between to keep the weapon from swinging. The weapon eventually knocked the pol[e]s down.”‘ The biggest concern seems to be finding the glitches in the system instead of reconsidering automated arms altogether.”

Nokia Takes Third Swing at Internet Tablet

DeviceGuru writes “It looks like Nokia is intent on scoring success with a Linux-powered Internet tablet. The company has unveiled the N810, its third attempt at hitting a home run with the concept. The new model adds a slide-out hardware keyboard, and also a built-in GPS receiver and FM transmitter (for in-car listening), among a number of other enhancements (such as a faster CPU and more memory). At this point, the device is positioned as an email and browsing tool, a social networking aid, a GPS, a VoIP phone, and a multimedia player (and streamer, thanks to built-in WiFi). Will this prove any more successful than the two previous iterations of this offering?”

Invisible Solar Nano Cells Promise Clean Energy

An anonymous reader writes “ZDNet is reporting that Harvard scientists have developed a silicon nanowire 200 hundred times thinner than a human hair that crank out up to 200 picowatts. Charles Leiber from Harvard University, who devised the technology with colleagues, is quoted: “An individual nanoelectronic device will indeed consume very little power, but to do something interesting will require many interconnected devices and thus the power requirement — even for nanosystems — can be a challenge”. Conventional sources, he added, are “bulky, non-renewable and expensive” by comparison.”
