It’s about time says Glenn Derene over at Popular Mechanics, in what amounts to an ode to the rise and future of super hard drive capacity. From his great accompanying interview with data storage visionary and computer science legend Mark Kryder: ‘To get to 10 Tbits per square inch will require a drastic change in recording technology … Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung … are currently working on this 10-terabits-per-square-inch goal, which would enable a 40-terabyte hard drive.’”

Steve Jobs Announces iPhone SDK

An anonymous reader writes “It finally happened. Steve Jobs announced an iPhone SDK today. The plan is to release it in February, and the suggestion is that apps will need to be digitally signed (not unlike digital signing in Leopard). Here’s hoping that developing for the iPhone/Touch will be cheap (or free) enough to allow the folks who have been writing apps to continue doing so. Says Jobs: ‘It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once–provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task.’”

FastTCP Commercialized Into An FTP Appliance

prostoalex writes “FastTCP technology, developed by researchers at CalTech, is being commercialized. A company called FastSoft has introduced a hardware appliance that delivers 15x-20x faster FTP transmissions than those delivered via regular TCP. Says eWeek: ‘The algorithm implemented in the Aria appliance senses congestion by continuously measuring the round-trip time for the TCP acknowledgment and then monitoring how that measurement changes from moment to moment.’”

Cryptography To Frustrate Printer-Ink Piracy

Zack Melich writes with news of a new front about to open in the war printer manufacturers wage with cartridge counterfeiters, refillers, and hardware hackers. A San Francisco company, Cryptography Research Inc., is designing a crypto chip to marry cartridges to printers. There’s no word so far that any printer manufacturer has committed to using it. Quoting: “The company’s chips use cryptography designed to make it harder for printers to use off-brand and counterfeit cartridges. CRI plans to create a secure chip that will allow only certain ink cartridges to communicate with certain printers. CRI also said that the chip will be designed that so large portions of it will have no decipherable structure, a feature that would thwart someone attempting to reverse-engineer the chip by examining it under a microscope to determine how it works. ‘You can see 95 percent of the [chip’s] grid and you still don’t know how it works,’ said Kit Rodgers, CRI’s vice president of business development. Its chip generates a separate, random code for each ink cartridge, thus requiring a would-be hacker to break every successive cartridge’s code to make use of the cartridge.”

AT&T Vs. Apple Store At the iPhone Launch

MBCook tips an article at Gizmodo that begins with a reader’s experiences trying to buy an iPhone yesterday at an AT&T store and an Apple store. Many, but not all, of the comments on the post echo this reader’s experience: Apple good, AT&T bad. “Day one revealed what all Apple aficionados fear. That AT&T, through the depths of its incompetence, could derail the iPhone.”

Dell To Sell Advanced Server Cooling Systems

Mitechsi writes “Dell has struck a deal with Emerson to sell advanced liquid cooling systems and services to data center owners. One type of supplemental cooling technology is called the Liebert XD. The XD consists of refrigerant-filled pipes that snake around the server racks in a data center. The liquid system cuts the cooling power load by about 30%–50% compared to other types of cooling systems.”

100x Faster Hard Drive In Lab

Gary lets us know about research out of the Netherlands that has succeeded in reading and writing a hard disk using polarized laser light. The researchers claim this offers a 100-times speedup over reading/writing using magnets. People have been trying for years to write data using polarized light; the secret of the current work’s success lies in its disk’s materials — gadolinium, iron, and cobalt. Working prototype drives should be available within a decade.

Recovering a Lost or Stolen Gadget

gurps_npc writes “The explosion of portable electronic devices, can really weigh you down. Carrying a pager, phone, iPod, camera, and game is quite a lot. Worse, it gives you many more such things to misplace or get stolen. This CNN story discusses some of the retrieval services that help you keep what belongs to you. I particularly like the first one, about a new Singapore-based software that when you download it to your phone, messages everyone in your phone’s database whenever a new chip with a new phone number is installed in the phone. This makes it very hard for someone to steal your phone as all your friends get their new phone number.”

Power Consumption and the Future of Computing

In a nutshell, engineers are now willing to take on a lot more hardware overhead in their designs (thermal sensors, transistors that put components into sleep states, buffers and filters at the ends of links, etc.) in order to get maximum power efficiency. The article, which has lots of nice graphics to illustrate the main points, mostly focuses on the specific technologies that Intel has in the pipeline to address these issues.”

The good folks at AnandTech violated one of the first iPhones to still our curiosity about whats inside the aluminum shell. ‘Please note that we’re doing this so you are not tempted to on your recent $500/$600 expenditure, while it is quite possible to take apart using easy to find tools we’d recommend against it as it will undoubtedly void your warranty and will most likely mar up the beautiful gadget’s exterior.’”
